Simple Sugar Scrubs for Kissable Lips

It’s easy for lips to get rough at any time of year – but it seems to happen especially in the dry air of winter, and during the hot summer months.  It makes sense – your lips are always out there, exposed to the elements.  And if you exfoliate the rest of your body (if you don’t, you should!) to keep it smooth and fresh … why not your lips?

As we age, our skin regenerates more slowly. I have noticed this more or so the past year or two leading up to my 40th birthday.  If you are “mature”, you may have noticed that your hair and nails grow more slowly, cuts take longer to heal, and your skin doesn’t have that same glow as when you were younger, and that’s because our skin cells have slowed down a bit!

By exfoliating, we gently scrub off the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal the new, fresh skin cells underneath.  This gets rid of gray, dry, flaky skin anywhere on your body.  Even on your lips!

Also, making your own personal care products is one of the best ways for you to keep toxins out of your body.

First of all, the ingredients in this DIY Lip Scrub are pure compared to store-bought lip scrubs.

In other lip scrubs on the market, I’ve seen ingredients like:

◾Lycasin (a kind of altered corn syrup)

◾Flavor (that could be almost anything)

◾Cornstarch (likely GMO)

◾Aluminum Lake Colors (yeah, no)

◾Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone – rated a 5 on EWG’s Skin Deep, this is basically an artificial fragrance, which I have many concerns about.

Second, the cost.  You can make homemade lip scrubs for next to nothing, compared with prices like $10 for .8 oz.

I have two lip scrubs that I rotate using depending on how I feel.  Both of these homemade lip scrubs are super simple!

Coconut & Brown Sugar Lip Scrubcoconut-and-brown-sugar-lip-scrub

This lip scrub only uses 2 ingredients, which you probably have in your cupboard already.  If you’re not in love with coconut oil yet – go buy yourself a jar of it and get ready to love the tasty food & skin care options it provides.

This lip scrub is great for traveling also because it has a good, creamy texture, but it’s not going to melt everywhere due to the coconut oil as coconut oil is solid at room temperature.  If you live in a hot climate, you may get different results.  In that case, just store this lip scrub in the fridge!)

  • I recommend using organic, cold-pressed coconut oil so you maintain that gorgeous coconut fragrance. But, if you hate coconut you can use ‘deodorized’ coconut oil, which has no smell!  (Or simple substitute for a different oil, and have a liquid-type scrub – ie, grapeseed oil or jojoba oil.)
  • Sugar is a gentle defoliant.  I used brown sugar in this recipe, but you could also use white sugar (or any kind of edible sugar you have on hand.)

This recipe is completely edible, which is a good thing, since it’s going on your lips!

A super simple, sweet, homemade lip scrub recipe. Makes 1 pot (2 tsp).

  1. Stir the coconut oil and brown sugar together with the back of a spoon and put into a little lip balm container. If the coconut oil is too hard to stir, gently warm it in your hands, or in the sun (or in the microwave, if you use one), to slightly soften the coconut oil before stirring.
  2. That’s it! This scrub should last for 6 months. But this is DIY, people, so we need to use common sense! If the lip scrub starts to smell different, or if you see any mold growing on it, just throw it out and make fresh.
  3. To Use: Just rub a little lip scrub on your finger, apply to your lips, and gently scrub with your fingertip. Lick, wipe or rinse off.
  4. If you’re applying lipstick afterwards you’ll want to wipe off the coconut oil residue from your lips, so it doesn’t make your lipstick run! Your turn: Have you ever used a lip scrub? How do you keep your lips looking young & soft? Let us know in the comments!

Again, start with organic, cold-pressed coconut oil, which is an amazing natural moisturizer loaded with antioxidants, add some ordinary sugar as an exfoliant, then top it all off with a tiny bit of honey and peppermint essential oil for taste!

I didn’t want to make a big batch of lip scrub because frankly I don’t need it that often, so I mixed up just enough to fill a 1 ounce container.

  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil (Buy here)
  • 1/4 tsp. honey
  • 3-4 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl with a spoon or fork.

Transfer to a small container like these (Buy here).

To use: Scoop out approximately 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon and gently rub into your lips in a circular motion for about 30 seconds.

Because all the ingredients are completely natural and edible, no need to wipe it off after scrubbing. Just lick your lips! Not only will your lips be nice and smooth, your breath will be minty fresh! 🙂
